Suggestions Needed

I'm having a hard time with the book right at the moment; it's too hard sometimes to make myself remember some things. I put a lot of that on my current situation; as Terrance said last night, "I just can't believe you're not gettin' any. If I was living with you...girl, you'd have to fake a period just to get me to back off." Now granted, Terrance is still at that stage where he's trying to impress me enough that I'll screw him--but he's got a point, when you think about it. It's hard to think about how it was with me and JP, when my current situation is so different and so very much not the way I want to live. And I don't know why, and can't get an explanation that makes it any easier--and so I block out certain past memories as a defense. I'm used to that strategy--it's served me well for the past ten years--but it makes it almost impossible to write about those memories.

(Talk to LJ about it, you say? Hahahahaha. :::wipes eyes:::: That's a good one. A conversation with LJ about emotions? About anything abstract, for that matter? About anything that's not directly related to HIM? It is to laugh, aha aha ha ha. Yeah, no, not happening. Nice thought, though.)

Listening to my little Fuck-With-Gladys'-Emotions station on Launchcast (an exercise to try to get my head back into the book, which totally did not work), I realized how firmly my musical tastes are rooted in 1994-ish. Now while I don't see anything WRONG with this, per se, I'd like to expand my horizons a bit.

(Flash, you in particular are gonna love this.)

So I'm looking for suggestions. Throw me some bands/albums/songs/whatever. Genre doesn't much matter--I'll cull my favorites after a few listens.

After all...there's always noise. (And Launchcast was just kind enough to favor me with "Smack My Bitch Up", which, while it doesn't help me with the book, at least puts me into a somewhat-feistier mood. Of course, right at the moment, overcooked pasta is in a feistier mood than I am, so you see how it is with me.)

  1. Every problem has within it the seeds of its own solution.

    We struggle with the complexities and avoid the simplicities.

  2. Okay, this is going to be a stretch. Our musical tastes are much much different, but you said you wanted to try something new. So I sat here for a minute trying to think of which band I really like that I think you might also like. I've decided that you should listen to The Be Good Tanyas. They're much softer than the kind of music you normally listen to (from what I get from here), they're an all girl band and I most like to listen to them when I take a bath. I don't know why that's relevant, I just thought it was. My favorite songs by them are It's Not Happening and In Spite Of All The Damage, both on the Chinatown CD. Let me know what you think.

  3. I'm not sure what kind of mood you're going for, and from the bands you mention in your story I may have a handle on what you like, although my personal musical tastes span the entire spectrum of music, from Eydie Gorme singing "Blame it on the Bossa Nova" to Nine Inch Nails singing "Head Like a Hole"
    But this is a short list of my "Loud and Angry" mood music:
    anything by Rollins Band, Hole, Rage Against the Machine, "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett always puts me in a mood.
    I find I do pretty well with songs I can sing along with. Although at the moment I don't have any "favorite albums" I haven't actually bought anything in a very long time. I've been finding myself with Blue Suede's version of Hooked on a Feeling and Rosemary Clooney singing Mambo Italiano caught in my head. Yeah, not very helpful huh? If you want I can throw some of my goofier stuff onto a CD for you... I got a lot of goofy...

  4. It's so interesting to see the range of people's tastes...so here's mine.

    India Arie or Nina Simone for good old fashioned in-your-body-sexy-soul. Some old-school really fun punk rock - The Real MacKenzies. Something to give your inner 15 year old boy a reason to break out the skate board - Linkin Park. I'm particularily fond of some of the Brit alternative music lately...Kaiser Chiefs & The Streets (is that right Flash?). Then there are some local Oakland favorites...Green Day as well as newcomers Lyrics Born & Flypside (Lyrics Born is hip hop & Flypside is a combo of hip hop, alt rock, and some latin flavor...although just so you know the artist Flypside who gives the band it's name also has some independent recordings that are strictly hip hop.)

    So LJ can't talk about feelings...but can you tell him you want a little more action than you've been getting?

  5. What I find funny is the fellow featured in Spinsterwitch's latest post (don't think I can link in a comment, sorry) is furious because women don't want sex, and here's our poor Gladys yowling away for it. Gladys, honey, you so need to just come out and demand it. Or kick his selfish ass to the curb and find someone who deserves you.

    Music suggestions? Try the Flaming Lips. Or Janis Joplin - there's female strength and pain for ya. I keep wanting to suggest Canadian music but I'm not sure how many of our kids have broken over the mighty 49th parallel. Let me know and I'll burn a cd for you.

  6. I am a musician so choosing music to listen to is always a chore. I find soundtracks are best if you want variety here are some of my favourites,

    Big Night, absolutely Fab has that mambo tune by clooney that pirate suggested;

    The Good Thief; great for writing to.

    Boys on The Side; all female singers;

    French Kiss; must be heard.

  7. :::squirrelling away musical suggestions::: My taste in music runs the gamut also; it's just not a very recent gamut, is the problem. Or at least, not outside of mainstream alt-rock/mainstream hip-hop radio. So all suggestions are welcome, no matter how far-fetched.

    As for the LJ situation: I have made the point clear to him on several occasions. It usually results in a one-off. Which is not what I had in mind. It's hard enough to have to mention it to him at all; I would prefer not to have to bring it up EVERY SINGLE RATZAFRATZIN' TIME. You know?

    (The goofball quoted over on Spinsterwitch's site, I thought, was bitching about the fact that women don't want no-strings-attached sex--we want emotional connection and all that schmoopy crap. Which we do, sometimes-but-by-no-means-always, and so do a lot of men, except the emotionally-stunted Mancow-worshipping asshelmet who wrote that ad. Which I hope nets him the most castrating bitch EVER.)

    Time to go home. It's been quite a day.

  8. Good news about the dumbass from the ad I found...the women on the site are taking him to task. I personally didn't feel it warranted a direct response, I just flagged it as inappropriate.

    Sorry, Gladys, about the sex situation. That is frustrating in more ways than one. I will say that Good Vibes is a girl's best friend, however. Maybe if you were pulling out the Pocket Rocket several times a week, he'd get the point. Not the same, I know.

  9. He's never home to get the point, alas. But I do agree with you...

    My advice: everyone buy stock in Duracell. :)

  10. As you know I ain't getting any either! So some tunes, Uh?
    As I know you've liked at least one Mansun song, I'd recommend the "kleptomania" album.
    Spinsterwitch was spot on about The Kaiser Chiefs.
    Maybe Hot hot heat, Doves, British Sea Power, Easyworld & there's always Gnu Cnu!
